About Me

My name is Joe Chavez. I have just graduated from Roosevelt High School, and I'm still discovering new interests and hobbies. Hopefully, my gap year to Southeast Asia will narrow it down a bit for me.

Some Time to Ourselves

It's absolutely amazing that I got the chance to practice meditation, taught by Buddhist Monks, in Thailand for four days. I learned that meditation isn't about clearing your mind and thinking about nothing, but instead to concentrate on the current moment.

Mindfulness is another thing we also practiced a lot of. Before our meals, we all took a moment we referred to as, "Contemplation"; Everyone slowly read aloud phrases from this laminated paper that encouraged us to re-purpose the meal:

This food is the gift of the whole universe: the earth, the sky, numerous living beings, and much hard, loving work.

May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive it.

May we recognize and transform our unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed, and learn to eat with moderation.

May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that we reduce the suffering of living beings, preserve our planet, and reverse the process of global warming.

I'm now in Siem Reap, Cambodia for the next few days visiting Angkor Wat (the largest religious monument in the world).

*It was difficult to take photos as the purpose of the retreat was to step away from technology and really live in the moment.*
